Again, I must put an icon dump on hold for yet another Are You Being Served? death. Mary Isobel 'Mollie' Sugden, who played Mary Elizabeth Jennifer Rachel Yiddle Abergavenny Slocombe in the hit sitcom set in an aging London department store, passed away today after suffering a long illness (according to Wikipedia, which isn't a reliable source). Mollie was one of the best comedy actresses the world has ever seen, and will be missed dearly by comedy lovers around the world. May Mrs. Slocombe and her dear pussy rest in peace... and I am unanimous in that!
Wendy Richard
Feb. 27th, 2009 09:50 pm I was going to update today, but when I woke up, I recieved some of the worst possible news - one of my all-time favourite actresses, Wendy Richard, MBE, had passed away. I couldn't let her passing go by without acknowledging it in some way, so I thought I'd post an entry here. Wendy Richard, born 1943, played shop assistant Miss Shirley Brahms in the BBC sitcom Are You Being Served?, starring alongside some of the greatest comic actors and actresses of the time, such as Mollie Sugden (The Liver Birds, Coronation Street) and Frank Thornton (Last of the Summer Wine). She later went on to play Pauline Folwer in the BBC soap opera EastEnders, a role she played for over twenty years. Wendy left the series after having many disagreements about her character with the writers. After EastEnders, she made a guest appearance in Benidorm, starred in a sitcom written by David Croft and Jeremy Lloyd (who also wrote Are You Being Served?) called Here Comes The Queen, and her last television appearance will be as Miss Crump in LWT's Marple: A Pocket Full of Rye. Wendy was diagnosed with terminal cancer late last year, and then married long time partner, John Burns. Wendy lost her battle with the disease on the 26th of February, 2009, aged only 65. Not only his her passing a sad occasion for the United Kingdom, it's a sad occasion for the whole world.
